The Tamil Nadu state government has sanctioned 60 MLD capacity seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants, one each at Kuthiraimozhi in Ramanathapuram and Alanthalai in Tuticorin at a cost of Rs. 675 crore and Rs. 680 crore respectively. Initially, the state will invest 80 per cent of the capital cost. Additional Central government assistance has also been sanctioned for Rs. 128 crore. The operation and maintenance cost for both the plants will be Rs. 37.05 per KL and the contract will be for the next 25 years.
