The Airports Department is seeking 24 billion baht in the next fiscal year to expand three airports in the South and one in the Northeast. Airport terminals at Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang and Khon Kaen will be enlarged as the present buildings have reached full capacity or are already overloaded. If funding is approved by the cabinet construction could start in December, with planned completion in 2021. The department also plans to open the new airport being built in Betong, Yala, no later than 2021. Funding of 1.9 billion baht is approved in October 2015 and it will also expand Mae Sot airport to accommodate larger aircraft in 2020.
