Semirara Mining and Power Corp. have started the construction of a 700-MW coal plant in Calaca, Batangas within the year. The project had received an environmental compliance certificate and approval of a power supply agreement and ‘right of way transmission line’. Semirara Mining, a unit of DMCI Holdings Inc. and Meralco PowerGen Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manila Electric Co., have formed a joint venture to build the power plant. The project company for the coal power plant is St. Raphael Power Generation Corp. Semirara Mining and Meralco PowerGen will equally take a 40-percent equity stake in the project. Marubeni Corp. of Japan could take a 20 percent interest.
